Planning Your Time
Just 70 minutes south of Beaune, two hours north of Avignon, and 90 minutes west of An-
necy, Lyon is France's best-kept urban secret. Lyon deserves at least one night and a full
day.WithfrequentandfastservicetomanyregionsinFrance—andbaggagestorageavail-
able—the city makes a handy day-visit for train travelers. But those who spend the night
can experience the most renowned cuisine in France at appetizing prices and enjoy one of
Europe's most beautifully floodlit cities.
For a full day of sightseeing, take the funicular up to Fourvière Hill, visit the Notre-
Dame Basilica, and tour the Roman Theaters and Gallo-Roman Museum. Ride the fu-
nicular back down to Vieux Lyon and have a French (read: slow) lunch, then explore the
old town and its hidden passageways. Finish your day touring the Museum of Fine Arts,
Resistance Center, or Lumière Museum (covering the history of early filmmaking). Most
of Lyon's important sights are closed on Mondays or Tuesdays, or both. Dine well in the
evening (bookahead ifpossible; yourhotelier is happytohelp) andcap yourdayenjoying
a stroll through the best-lit city in France.
Drivers connecting Lyon with southern destinations should contemplate the scenic
detour via the Ardèche Gorges (described on here ) , and those connecting to Burgundy
