Locals like to believe that Hercules built Semur-en-Auxois (suh-moor-ahn-ohx-wah)
on his return from Spain. But Semur's ancient origins date back to Neolithic times, long
before Hercules' visit. Today the town works as a base to visit the sights described in this
area, or as a handy lunch or dinner stop. Semur is also about 45 minutes from the fam-
ous church in Vézelay and two hours from Paris, making it a workable first- or last-night
