Beaune's Best Wine and Food Stores
Beaune overflows with wine boutiques eager to convince you that their food
products or wines are best. Here are a few to look for (to locate these, see the map
on here ) .
The wine shop Denis Perret, which has a helpful English-speaking staff man-
aged by friendly Alain, offers a good selection in all price ranges, though most are
from large negotiants. They can chill a white for your picnic (Mon-Sat 9:00-12:00
& 14:00-19:00, Sun 9:00-12:00, 40 Place Carnot, tel. [phone],

For an exquisite selection of fruit liqueurs (such as crème de cassis—a Burgun-
dian treat), fruit syrups, and Burgundian brandy, find Védrenne at 28 Rue Carnot
(closed Sun).
For food, Alain Hess offers an elegant display of local cheeses, mustards, and
other gourmet food products (7 Place Carnot). A few doors down, welcoming Mu-
lot - Petitjean Pain d'Epices shows off exquisite packages of this tasty local spice
bread, also handy as gifts (1 Place Carnot).
Helpful Hints
Market Days: Beaune hosts a smashing Saturday market and a smaller Wednesday mar-
ket. Both are centered on Place de la Halle and open until 12:30. The Saturday mar-
ket fires up much of the old town and is worth planning ahead for. For either market,
watch the action from the Baltard Café on Place de la Halle, then do as the locals do
andhavelunchatanoutdoorcafé(manygoodchoices—see“EatinginBeaune,”later,
for ideas; sit down by 12:30 or forget it).
Supermarkets: Supermarché Casino has several small shops in Beaune, a store in the
towncenteronRueCarnot,andamother-shipstorelocatedthroughthearchoffPlace
Madeleine (Mon-Sat 8:30-20:00, closed Sun except summer mornings).
Internet Access: The main TI (hourslistedearlier)offersfreeWi-Fi,asdoes Dix Carnot
Café —provided you consume (daily 8:00-19:00, on Place Carnot next to the Athen-
aeum's back-door entrance). The recommended Bistrot Bourguignon offers Wi-Fi
with wine.
Post Office: The main post office is at 7 Boulevard St Jacques. A handy PTT annex sells
stamps and Colissimo boxes for international shipping (see here ) , as well as credit for
any mobile phone (Mon-Fri 13:00-17:00, closed Sat-Sun, 37 Rue Carnot).
