ing, and (for short periods) strenuous trail to Montenvers (overlooking the Mer de Glace
glacier). You'll do lots of boulder-stepping and cross occasional streams that can dampen
your shoes and make the rocks very slippery. Pay attention.
After about an hour at a steady pace, the trail splits. Follow signs up the steep trail to
LeSignal (morescenicandeasier),ratherthantothelefttowardMontenvers(lookseasier,
but becomes very difficult). At this point, you'll grind it out up switchbacks for about 30

long, sometimes steep, but always memorable drop to Montenvers and the Mer de Glace.
As you drop, notice the dirt path the receding glacier left in its wake. In Montenvers, take
the train back to Chamonix. Don't walk the rest of the trail down from Montenvers (long,
steep, disappointing views).
