decorations animate the city throughout December. It's also slammed in the summer and
on many weekends, and will feel claustrophobic for some. But evenings bring relief from
the summer crowds, along with lovely, warm lighting.
Modern Annecy (pop. 50,000) sprawls for miles, but we're interested only in its compact
old town, hunkered down on the northwest corner of the lake. The old town is split by the
Thiou River and bounded by the château to the south, the TI and Rue Royale to the north,
Rue de la Gare to the west, and the lake to the east.
