Low Corniche:
The Basse Corniche (also called “Corniche Inférieure”) strings
ports, beaches, and seaside villages together for a traffic-filled ground-floor view. It was
built in the 1860s (along with the train line) to bring people to the casino in Monte Carlo.
When this Low Corniche was finished, many hill-town villagers descended to the shore
andstartedthecommunitiesthatnowlinethesea.Before1860,thepopulationofthecoast
between Villefranche-sur-Mer and Monte Carlo was zero. Think about that as you make
the trip today.
