In-Depth Information
Other Winter Activities
Beyond the skating rink below the Fairmont Banff Springs is an unofficial toboggan run;
ask at your hotel for sleds or rent them from the sports store at the Fairmont Banff Springs;
$6 per hour.
Anyone interested in ice climbing must register at the national park desk in the Banff
Visitor Centre or call 403/762-1550. The world-famous (if you're an ice climber) Termin-
ator is just outside the park boundary.
If none of these activities appeal to you, head to Upper Hot Springs (403/762-1515,
10am-10pm daily, $7.50) for a relaxing soak.
Camping might not be everyone's idea of a winter holiday, but one section of Tunnel
Mountain Campground remains open year-round.
INDOOR RECREATION
Swimming and Fitness Facilities
Many of Banff's bigger hotels have fitness rooms, and some have indoor pools. A popular
place to swim and work out is in the Sally Borden Fitness & Recreation Facility (Banff
Centre, St. Julien Rd., 403/762-6450, 6am-11pm daily), which holds a wide range of fit-
ness facilities, a climbing gym, squash courts, a 25-meter-long heated pool, a wading pool,
and a hot tub. General admission is $10.50, or pay $4.50 to swim only most evenings. Go
to www.banffcentre.ca for a schedule.
Willow Stream Spa
This luxurious spa facility in the Fairmont Banff Springs (405 Spray Ave., 403/762-2211,
6am-10pm daily) is the place to pamper yourself. It sprawls over two levels and 3,000
square meters (0.7 acre) of a private corner of the hotel. The epicenter of the facility is a
circular mineral pool capped by a high glass-topped ceiling and ringed by floor-to-ceiling
windows on one side and on the other by hot tubs fed by cascading waterfalls of varying
temperatures. Other features include outdoor saltwater hot tubs, private solariums, steam
rooms, luxurious bathrooms, and separate male and female lounges complete with fire-
places and complimentary drinks and snacks. Numerous other services are offered, includ-
ing facials, body wraps, massage therapy, salon services, and hydrotherapy. Entry to Wil-
low Stream is included in some package rates for guests at the hotel. Admission is $80 per
day, which includes the use of a locker and spa attire, with almost 100 services available at
additional cost (most of these include general admission, so, for example, you can spend
the day at Willow Stream and receive a one-hour massage for $195).
