In-Depth Information
their remote location. Their accessibility ranges from the Elizabeth Parker Hut (Yoho Na-
tional Park), which can be reached by bus, to the Neil Colgan Hut, Canada's highest hab-
itable structure, 2,960 meters (9,700 feet) from sea level on a windswept ledge above Mo-
raine Lake. Often of historical significance, each of the huts has a stove, lantern, kitchen
utensils, and foam mattresses. Rates range $18-32 per person per night.
Privately operated backcountry lodges are found in Banff, Jasper, and Yoho National
Parks, as well as Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park. The most luxurious is Lake O'Hara
Lodge in Yoho National Park. It lies 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) from the nearest public
road—access is by shuttle bus—and is surrounded by some of the finest hiking in all
the Canadian Rockies. Banff National Park has two backcountry lodges: Shadow Lake
Lodge, northwest of Banff, and Skoki Lodge, east of Lake Louise. Jasper National Park
is home to Tonquin Amethyst Lake Lodge and Tonquin Valley Backcountry Lodge.
All require some degree of effort to reach—either on foot or on horseback in summer, or
on cross-country skis or snowshoes in winter. Mount Assiniboine Lodge is farthest from
the road system but can be reached by helicopter. Rates at these lodges begin at $180 per
person, including three meals. None have television, but all have running water and a con-
genial atmosphere.
