In-Depth Information
The Best Western Calgary Centre Inn (3630 Macleod Trail SW, 403/287-3900 or
877/287-3900, www.bwcalgarycentre.com , $149-169 s or d) may be close to the geograph-
ical center of the city, but it's not downtown as the name suggests. Each of the rooms is
decorated in a bright and breezy color scheme and comes stocked with amenities such as a
hair dryer and coffeemaker. On the premises are an indoor pool and a fitness center. Rates
include continental breakfast.
A few blocks farther south, with a C-train station on its back doorstep, stands Holiday
Inn Macleod Trail (4206 Macleod Trail SW, 403/287-2700 or 800/661-1889,
www.holidayinn.com , $149 s or d), where the 150 rooms were last renovated in 2009. Fa-
cilities here include a large indoor pool, a restaurant, and a lounge.
MOTEL VILLAGE
Motel Village is Calgary's main concentration of moderately priced motels. The “village”
is not an official designation, just a dozen motels bunched together on a single block
bordered by 16th Avenue NW, Crowchild Trail, and Banff Trail. From the adjacent Banff
Trail station, downtown is a short, safe ride away on the C-train.
$100-150
The M Comfort Inn (2369 Banff Trail NW, 403/289-2581 or 800/228-5150,
www.comfortinncalgary.com , $139-179 s or d) combines a wide range of amenities with
reasonable rates to be my pick of Motel Village accommodations. All rooms have a simple
yet snazzy contemporary look, along with high-speed Internet, a coffeemaker, a hair dryer,
and an ironing facility, and a national paper is delivered to your door each morning. Other
features include an indoor pool and waterslide complex. Rates include a light breakfast.
Best Western Village Park Inn (1804 Crowchild Trail NW, 403/289-0241,
www.bestwesternalberta.com , $145 s or d) features 159 spacious rooms well equipped for
business and leisure travelers, and a huge atrium containing a lounge with an adjoining
restaurant (6:30am-11pm) and a swimming pool.
WEST OF DOWNTOWN
This area, known as 16th Avenue NW within city limits, has a string of inexpensive motels
lining the TransCanada Highway heading west from the city toward the Canadian Rockies,
but none are a particularly good value.
