DINOSAUR VALLEY

East of Calgary, the Red Deer River has carved a deep valley through the otherwise
featureless prairie, and in doing so has unearthed one of the world's most significant
paleontological resources through an area known as the Badlands or Dinosaur Val-
ley. Before charging out into the badlands, it is important to understand that the
two major dinosaur destinations, the town of Drumheller and Dinosaur Provincial
Park, are not close to each other. It is possible to visit each separately on a day trip
from Calgary, but to visit both destinations in one day is a little much.
The highlight of a visit to the town of Drumheller, just over an hour's drive
northeast of Calgary, is the Royal Tyrrell Museum (North Dinosaur Trail, 403/

Aug., 10am-5pm Tues.-Sun. the rest of the year, adult $12, senior $10, youth $8),
the world's largest museum devoted entirely to paleontology. It integrates display
areas with fieldwork done literally on the doorstep, with specimens transported to
