Getting There and Around
GETTING THERE
Waterton Lakes National Park is in the far southwest corner of Alberta, a three-hour drive
south from Calgary along Highway 2 and around four hours from Banff. The nearest city
(and airport) is Lethbridge, 140 kilometers (87 miles) to the northeast. The airport at Leth-
bridge is served by Air Canada's regional connector and has Budget, Hertz, and National
rental cars. The closest Greyhound buses come to the park is Pincher Creek, 50 kilomet-
ers (31 miles) away. From the depot (1015 Hewetson St., 403/627-2716), a cab to the park
(call Crystal Taxi, 403/627-4262) will run around $100 each way.
GETTING AROUND
Tamarack Outdoor Outfitters (Mount View Rd., 403/859-2378,
www.watertonvisitorservices.com ) operates hiker shuttle services to various trailheads
within the park. Cameron Lake, the starting point for the Carthew-Alderson Trail (which
ends back in town), is a popular drop-off point; $15 one-way. You could take one of these
shuttles, then return on the bus later in the day if driving the steep mountain roads doesn't
appeal to you. The company also offers a shuttle along the Chief Mountain International
Highway.
Pat's (Mount View Rd., 403/859-2266) rents mountain bikes for $10 for the first hour,
then $7 per hour thereafter, to a maximum of $45 per day. Motorized scooters are $35 per
hour or $135 per day.
