GETTING THERE
Jasper is linked to the outside world by road and rail. Alberta's capital, Edmonton, is 364
kilometers (226 miles) to the east along a wide, mostly-twinned highway. Heading south
along the Icefields Parkway, Banff is 287 kilometers (178 miles) and Calgary is 406 kilo-
meters (252 miles). From Vancouver, Jasper is 781 kilometers (486 miles) to the northeast;
allow eight hours.
Getting to Jasper by public transportation is easy, although the closest airport handling
domestic and international flights is at Edmonton, a four-hour drive to the east. The VIA
Rail station and the bus depot (used by both Greyhound and Brewster) are in the same
building, central to town at 607 Connaught Drive. The building is open 24 hours daily in
summer (7:30am-10:30pm Mon.-Sat., 7:30am-11am and 6:30pm-10:30pm Sun. the rest of
the year). Lockers are available for $1 per day. Car-rental agencies and a café are here, too.
Rail
Jasper is on the Canadian route, the only remaining transcontinental passenger rail service
in the country. Trains run either way three times weekly. To the west the line divides,
going to both Prince Rupert and Vancouver; to the east it passes through Edmonton and all
points beyond. For all rail information, contact VIA Rail (800/561-8630, www.viarail.ca ) .
