Tours
Brewster (780/852-3332, www.explorerockies.com ) offers a four-hour Discover Jasper
tour taking in Patricia and Pyramid Lakes, Maligne Canyon, and Jasper Tramway (ride
not included in fare). It departs at 8:30am daily April-October from the railway station;
$65. Maligne Tours (616 Patricia St., 780/852-3370, www.malignelake.com ) schedules a
variety of tours, including a six-hour trip to Maligne Lake ($95, includes cruise). Jasper
Adventure Centre (604 Connaught Dr., 780/852-5595, www.jasperadventurecentre.com ),
in the Chaba Theatre, operates several well-priced tours, including the following: Mount
Edith Cavell (departs 2pm, three hours, $65), Maligne Valley (departs 8:30am, five hours,
$95, including boat tour), and Miette Hot Springs and wildlife (departs 6pm, four hours,
$72). Similarly priced tours take in historic sites and local wildlife.
Indoor Recreation
The Jasper Aquatic Centre (401 Pyramid Lake Rd., 780/852-3663) has an Olympic-size
swimming pool; admission $5.80. The Jasper Activity Centre (780/852-3381), next door,
has squash courts, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a climbing wall, a weight room, and
an indoor skate park; admission $7.50.
WINTER RECREATION
Winter is certainly a quiet time in the park, but that doesn't mean there's a lack of things
to do. Marmot Basin offers world-class alpine skiing; many snow-covered hiking trails are
groomed for cross-country skiing; portions of Lac Beauvert and Pyramid Lake are cleared
for ice-skating; horse-drawn sleighs travel around town; and Maligne Canyon is trans-
formed into a magical, frozen world. Hotels reduce rates by 40-70 percent through winter,
and many offer lodging and lift tickets for around $100 per person.
Marmot Basin
The skiing at Marmot Basin (780/852-3816 or 866/952-3816, www.skimarmot.com ) is
highly underrated. A huge injection of cash in recent years has meant even better facilities
are offered, with the Canadian Rockies Express being the longest detachable quad in Al-
berta. Lifts now take skiers and boarders into Charlie's Basin, a massive powder-filled
