In-Depth Information
In the park's extreme southwestern corner, this trail follows an old fire road for one kilo-
meter (0.6 miles), then narrows for an easy stroll through thick forest to a viewpoint above
these 30-meter-high (100-feet-high) falls on the Kicking Horse River. A steep, switchback-
ing descent leads 500 meters (0.3 mile) to a viewpoint downstream of the base of the falls.
BOATING AND FISHING
No river or stream in this area is particularly well known for fishing, mainly because most
of the water is glacially derived and therefore heavily silt-laden. Species present in the
park's lakes and rivers include Dolly Varden and rainbow, lake, and cutthroat trout. A na-
tional park fishing permit costs $10 daily or $35 annually.
Emerald Lake Canoe Rentals (250/343-6000, 9am-8pm daily June-Sept.), in a small
boat shed on the shore of Emerald Lake, rents canoes and small boats for $30 per hour,
$45 for two hours, or $80 all day. Fishing in Emerald Lake isn't world-class, but there are
some trout in the waters, and Emerald Lake Canoe Rentals offers a range of fishing tackle
for rent or sale.
WINTER RECREATION
The TransCanada Highway through the park is open year-round, but facilities are only
open June-mid-September. Some of the trails at higher elevations are impassable until July.
Wintertime attracts cross-country skiers who happily slide along the Yoho Valley to frozen
Takakkaw Falls or follow the Lake O'Hara trails.
Practicalities
ACCOMMODATIONS AND CAMPING
The park provides a variety of options, all well priced in comparison to Banff. Some trav-
elers make Yoho a base for an entire Canadian Rockies vacation, traveling to Banff (just
over an hour's drive east) or Golden (under an hour west) for supplies and civilized diver-
sions.
