In-Depth Information
M Emerald Lake: You can hike, canoe, fish, or simply soak up the mountain
scenery ( click here ) .
M Lake O'Hara: Quite simply, magical. Access is limited by a quota system, so
take heed of the reservation information and be prepared for a day of hiking you
will always remember ( click here ) .
M Burgess Shale: The hiking is strenuous along a restricted-access trail, but be-
cause this is one of the world's most important paleontological sites, the trek is a
once-in-a-lifetime experience ( click here ) .
M Kicking Horse Mountain Resort: I've ridden each of the gondolas in the Ca-
nadian Rockies, and this one, near Golden, is my favorite for unbeatable top-of-the-
world views ( click here ).
The summer tourist season in Yoho is shorter than in the other national parks. Emerald
Lake doesn't become ice free until early June, and the road to Takakkaw Falls remains
closed until mid-June. While July and August are the prime months to visit, September is
also pleasant, both weather- and crowd-wise. Lake O'Hara doesn't become snow free until
early July, but the best time to visit is the last week of September, when the forests of larch
have turned a brilliant gold color.
The last part of this chapter covers the town of Golden, which lies beyond the park's
western boundary. Here, the highlight is summer gondola rides at Kicking Horse Moun-
tain Resort. The more adventurous can take a white-water rafting trip down the Kicking
Horse River or go mountain biking. Including Golden with the highlights of Yoho Nation-
al Park makes for a very long day trip; an overnight stay either in the park or in Golden
will give you two days to enjoy both at a relaxed pace.
