In-Depth Information
River and surrounded by magnificent mountain peaks. It comprises two 18-hole courses:
Mount Kidd, featuring undulating terrain and an island green on the 197-yard fourth
hole, and Mount Lorette. Both courses measure more than 7,000 yards from the back
markers. The course opened in 1983 at a cost of almost $1 million per hole. The bunkers
alone—filled with pure white silica from British Columbia—cost $350,000. Renowned
golf-course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., who designed the layout, described the Kana-
naskis River Valley as “the best spot I have ever seen for a golf course.” After marveling
at the surrounding mountains, few will disagree with his statement. Just don't let the 142
sand traps, water that comes into play on more than half the holes, or the large rolling
greens distract you. Greens fees are $100 (Albertan residents pay $80), and a cart is an ad-
ditional $17 per person. Golfers enjoy complimentary valet parking and use of the driving
range, a restaurant and bar with awesome mountain views, and a well-stocked golf shop.
Nakiska
The winter resort of Nakiska (403/591-7777, www.skinakiska.com ; for accommodation
reservations, call 800/258-7669) was built to host the alpine skiing events of the 1988
Winter Olympic Games but is now open to the public. Great cruising and fast fall-line ski-
ing on runs cut specially for racing will satisfy the intermediate-to-advanced crowd. The
Bronze chairlift accesses a novice area below the main area. The area has a total of 28 runs
and a vertical rise of 735 meters (2,410 feet). Lift tickets are adult $74, senior and student
$60, child $34. Kids ages five and younger ski free. Packages are offered in adjacent Kana-
naskis Village, as well as Canmore, 56 kilometers (35 miles) to the northwest and linked
by shuttle Tuesday and Friday through the winter season.
Cross-Country Skiing
The most accessible of Kananaskis Country's 200 kilometers (124 miles) of cross-country
trails are in the Ribbon Creek area. Most heavily used are those radiating from Kananaskis
Village and those around the base of Nakiska. Most trails are easy to intermediate, includ-
ing a five-kilometer (3.1-mile) track up Ribbon Creek. Rentals are available in the Village
Trading Post in Kananaskis Village.
