ash deposition can both fertilize and poison ecosystems, altering nutrient avail-
ability in both surface and benthic environments and affecting entire food-web
structures. In the aftermath of a large explosive eruption, the combined effects of
increased photosynthesis, weathering and carbon burial will lower atmospheric
CO 2 levels, but to what extent is poorly quantified and will vary hugely between
each volcanic eruption.
