Eritrea, determined from the AIRS sensor on board the Aqua platform. AIRS has
the capability of distinguishing UTLS SO 2 from gas lower down in the tropo-
sphere; this feature makes these retrievals useful for investigating the effects of
volcanic SO 2 emission on climate. One path of the CALIPSO satellite is shown
by the black line, with time labels at 4-minute intervals. Lower panel : Corres-
