In the Second World War things were completely different and German forces occupied the
Island from the 1st July 1940 until 9 th May 1945, which was in fact one day after the end
of the war in Europe. Liberation Day is still a major public holiday in the Channel Islands.
Walking around the Island there is plenty evidence of the occupation. A bunker at Petit
Port and a restored gun at Les Landes.
