St Brelade, St Mary and St John's Parish Churches
Although the population of the island is rapidly closing in on 100,000, with us all squeezed
into 45 square miles there are still significant areas of countryside. As you fly into Jersey
the overall impression is of a rural island, although it is clearly coming under more and
more pressure. What is hoped is that the politicians and planners have the courage and vis-
ion to resist the continual demand for development.
The more urban parishes are situated along the south coast, St Helier, St Saviour and St
Clement, towards the centre and the southeast with St Brelade in the southwest. The north-
ern parishes are all rural in character. Although St Brelade's does have one of the largest
populations it is also the parish with the highest percentage of natural environment, ac-
counting for 38% of land use. This is because of the headlands of Noirmont, Pt Le Fret
and Gorselands as well as the sand dunes. St Clement has the smallest percentage of land
still classified as natural environment, just 4% of the parish's area.
