St Matthews Glass Church : Next to the Coronation Park the church dates from 1840 but
the present interior is the result of a commission from 1934 by Lady Trent, in memory of
her husband, Jessie Boot, who was the founder of Boot's the Chemist. The glass of the
name does not refer to the stained glass normally associated with churches, but to the white
glass, which is the work of the French artist Rene Lalique. She had asked the artist to re-
furbish the church, which was opposite her St Lawrence home, Villa Millbrook. The only
works which are similar to those at St Matthew's are at church in Calvados, Normandy,
France but these were largely destroyed during the Second World War.
