Parking: Pay Cards are used for parking throughout the Island, although there are still a
number of free car parks once you are away from St Helier. They need to be used whenev-
er the Parking Sign is seen. Somewhat inconveniently for visitors the cards need to be
purchased before you arrive in the car park. They are available from shops, garages etc
throughout the island and can be purchased individually or in topics of multiple cards.
It is necessary to scratch the card indicating the time and date that you arrived in the car
park. Generally they are only required from 08.00 to 17.00 Monday to Saturday but it is
always worth checking the signs, as there are a few exceptions. In some areas, for example
in St Brelade's Bay each scratch card is valid for 2 hours as opposed to the usual 1-hour,
another reason to check the signs.
Multi-storey car parks can be found in St Helier, at the following locations: Green Street,
Patriotic Street, Pier Road, Sand Street and Minden Place. Parking is limited to a maxim-
um of 3 hours in the last 2 car parks.
Other car parks (or parking areas) in St Helier are located on the Esplanade, People's Park,
the Parade, La Route du Fort, the Waterfront, Commercial Buildings, Snow Hill, Midvale
Road and close to the Art's Centre.
When looking for somewhere to park in St Helier pay attention as some areas are reserved
as Resident's Parking Zones and ignoring the signs could result in a fine.
A recent change has been the introduction of payment when leaving Sand Street Car Park.
The system relies upon number plate recognition, so make sure that you know what your
number is. Be aware that the cost per hour increases quite significantly after 3 hours, so
don't plan on parking here all day.
Police: Surprisingly there are two Police Forces in Jersey. The uniformed States of Jersey
Police are paid officers who undertake the daily police work, which is generated in a com-
munity such as Jersey. Their Headquarters are in Rouge Bouillon and they will be the of-
ficers that you are most likely to come into contact with.
The other Police Force is the Honorary one, with each Parish having its own force. In order
of seniority the officers are:
1. Constable - effectively the “Father of the Parish”
2. Centenier
3. Vingteniers
4. Constable Officers
