2.5.1.5 Using More of Renewable and Recycled Raw Materials
Replacing fossil fuel-based plastics with identical resins derived from
renewable sources is receiving the serious attention it deserves from
industry. Revolutionary package design by Coca-Cola (IPF Inc, 2009) to
introduce aPETbeverage bottlewhereoneofthetwomonomers usedinthe
resinisderivedfromrenewableplantmaterialasopposedtofromfossilfuel,
is a particularly good example. These bottles are closed-loop recyclable 17
or downcycled into other products. A premier apparel manufacture r 18 also
produced a pair of jeans that contains at least 20% recycled polyester fiber
derived from recycled PET (i.e., eight bottles recycled into each pair).
2.5.1.6 Reusing and Recycling Postuse Products
Designing plastic products that allow convenient reuse as well as material
recycling is an indispensable aspect of sustainable growth and underscores
