In-Depth Information
14 Photodegradable six-pack rings have been available since early 1990s. At
least 16 states require these to be enhanced photodegradable.
15 A vinyl ketone comonomer would result in ketone side chains.
16 Discussions of polymer photodegradation often include a comparison
of the main-chain bond energies with the wavelength-dependent photon
energies. This should not be taken to mean that photons at these
wavelengths directly dissociate these bonds; most photodegradation
reactions are secondary processes.
17 Biodegradation alsoincludesnon-microbially mediated degradation such
as in biodegradable human implants (Brach del Prever et al., 1996).
18 In the laboratory, enzymes isolated from living organisms can also affect
biodegradation in systems that have no living cells.
19 Reverte oxo-biodegradable additive masterbatch is intended for use with
PE, PP, and PET. Other such additives are available from Addiflex and
Symphony (Ammala et al., 2011).
20 Advertised claims of 100% biodegradability of PVC, PET, and PE are
misleading and have not been supported with repeatable robust data.
The US National Advertising Division (Better Business Bureau) recently
recommended that a leading manufacturer stop using such claims.
21 The 2013 study was conducted by TCKT (Transfer Center for Polymer
Technology) for EuPc (Brussels). Based on the findings, EuPc urges
better sorting and collection of waste degradable plastics. Available at

22 Composting makes sense when there is a market demand for compost
as a product. In such situations, there is enough readily biodegradable
biomass in the MSW to generate compost.
