Notes
1 We use the term “polymers” and “plastics” interchangeably in this
discussion for convenience. Strictly speaking, plastics are a subset of the
larger group of chemical compounds called polymers. Polymers include
all long-chain molecules with repeat units in their chemical structure
and include rubbery materials as well as fibers that are not considered
plastics.
2 The average value of the molecular weight is denoted by the bold letters
( Mn or Mw ).
3 The tensile strength of UHMWPE fiber (Spectra 1000) is in the range
of 2.9-3.7 GPa. This compares well with that of high-carbon steel (1.2
GPa). Multiwalled carbon nanotubes, however, have even higher tensile
strength of over 60 GPa!
4 Direct labor in plastic plants has reduced from an average of 25% of
manufacturing costs in 1960 to only 10% today.
