4.1 PLASTICS: THE MIRACLE MATERIAL
Most plastics used in high volume today were in fact synthesized and
commercializedinthe1950s. Figure4.1 givesatimelineforthedevelopment
ofcommonplasticsinusetoday.Plasticsaretrulyuniquematerialsdestined
to replace most of the conventional materials in building, transportation,
and packaging applications. Metal and asbestos-cement pipes have been
replaced by either poly(vinyl chloride) [PVC] or polybutene for water/
sewage pipes in construction. Wood-based siding, window frames, and door
frames have for the most part been replaced by PVC alternatives. In the
packaging sector, glass, metal, and paperboard continue to be replaced by
plastic film, while natural-fiber textiles are being replaced by synthetic-fiber
substitutes. Plastic composite is becoming a popular choice in
transportation applications as well.
