3.5.3 Polystyrene
The highest volume use of PS (including expanded PS foam, EPS) is in
foodpackagingandfoodservicesectors(~37%).PScontainersarepopularly
used for packaging single-serve food items such as yogurt. EPS dominate
the market for hot beverage service items and soup bowls and carryout
food containers. About 10-11 MMT of the resin is produced annually (2013
statistics), worldwide.
The monomer ethylbenzene is made from petroleum-derived benzene and
ethylene. Free radical polymerization is usually carried out in the gas phase
with an iron oxide or other metal oxide catalyst yielding PS resin:
