Coupling reactions between monomers can also occur without the loss of a
small molecule such as water to yield a step growth polymer. For instance,
a diisocyanate can couple with a dialcohol to yield a polyurethane as shown
below. The
linkage formed is called a “urethane” group, hence the
name polyurethane:
