A very damaging earthquakes occurred on 6 April 2009 in central Italy (Fig.
2.20a), in the Abruzzo region, where the city of L'Aquila (situated in the epicentral
area), very rich in cultural treasures, was most damaged (Fig. 2.20b). The
earthquake magnitude was not very high, but due to near-source conditions, bad
soil conditions (sedimentary basin with maximum depth of about 250 m) and
seismic unprepared historical buildings, the damage was very significant.
