One of the best known historical events is the 1755 Lisbon Portugal earthquake
(Fig. 2.4), when a magnitude 8.7 ground motion, produced on the Atlantic Sea,
struck the Iberian Peninsula (Wikipedia, nd). The tsunami was measured at 6m
near Lisbon and 20m at Cadiz in Spain, killing thousands along the shores. Fires
burned for 6 days after the initial shock and half the houses in Lisbon were ruined.
