The second very important collision area is the result of multiple collisions and
subduction in the zone of the Adria plate (see Fig., 5.18). The very dense location
of epicenters in Italy is presented in Figure 6.14a. It is very interesting to observe
that the majority of sources are situated in the upper rigid crustal zone (no more
than about 30 km); only in the zone of the African Plate subduction, are the
sources very deep (Fig 6.14b), what corresponds to the intermediate interslab
earthquakes (see the Section 6.4).
In the Eastern zone of the Adria Plate a network of faults is formed due to the
collision with the costal part of Dinarides and Albanides. These faults are
presented in Figure 6.15a for the regional tectonic of Croatia and the
corresponding location of epicenters in Figure 6.14b. One can see that the
seismically active areas are mostly located along the coast, only a few isolated
seismic events being far from coast.
