Indonesian segment is the last part of the Alpine-Himalayan belt, ending in the
Circum-Pacific Ring. The first part is located along Sumatra Island, where the
Indo-Australian plate subducts beneath the Eurasian plate.
5.4.4 Mid-Atlantic Ridge
The last important belt is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (Fig. 5.31). It is an underwater
mountain range of the Atlantic Ocean, which runs from Iceland to Antarctica: this
is the longest mountain range on Earth, separating the both North American from
the Eurasian plates and South American from the African plates (Fig. 5.31).
According to plate tectonics, this ridge runs along a divergent boundary.
Fortunately, this belt traverses only one inhabited territory, the Iceland island (Fig.
5.32).
