Albert and Regent streets, south of the Swing Bridge, hum with commerce, from discount shoe stores to the city's largest
supermarket and department store, Brodies. Belize City also has a variety of souvenir shops, including the Belizean
Handicraft Market Place, near Memorial Park, and the makeshift stalls just outside the Tourist Village (see p.48), where
locals sell regional crafts.

established bookshop features a wide range of topics on
Belize, including maps and guides, along with o ce
supplies. Mon-Fri 7.30am-5.30pm, Sat 8am-noon.
Belizean Handicraft Market Place Memorial Park
T 223 3627. For authentic souvenirs, stop by this market,
which is filled with Belizean hardwood crafts, including
bowls, picture frames and chopping boards, as well as
Maya basketry and hot sauces and spices. Hours vary, but
generally Mon-Sat 9am-5pm.
Brodies Albert St & Regent St T 227 7070,

it. This massive grocery and department store in the heart
of town sells everything from clothing and outdoor
equipment to canned goods and liquor. In fact, this is a
good spot to pick up souvenir bottles of local rum at
reasonable prices. There's also an on-site pharmacy. There's
another outlet at Mile 2.5 Philip Goldson Hwy. Mon-Thurs
8.30am-7pm, Fri 8.30am-8pm, Sat 8.30am-9pm.
The Image Factory Art Foundation 91 N Front St, or
by appointment T 610 5072, W imagefactory.bz. Just
east of the Marine Terminal, the Image Factory features
contemporary art from throughout Belize via outstanding,
sometimes provocative, exhibitions, where you can often
get a chance to discuss the works with the artists
themselves. For unique gifts, browse the adjoining shop,
which also sells a wide range of Belizean topics, music and
videos,
along
with
selected
souvenirs.

wide range of liquors, including the signature Travellers

DIRECTORY
Banks and exchange Most banks, including First
Caribbean International Bank and Scotiabank, are in the
city centre, on and around Albert St; all have ATMs that
accept foreign-issued cards and can process cash advances
over the counter.
Immigration The Belize Immigration O ce is in the
Government Complex on Mahogany St, near the junction of
Central American Blvd and the George Price Hwy (Mon-
Thurs 8.30am-4pm, Fri 8.30am-3.30pm; T 222 4620).
Medical care The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital
(Princess Margaret Drive, near Philip Goldson Hwy T 223
1548, W khmh.bz) is the principal hospital of the Belizean
health service. It has most medical specialities and a 24hr
accident and emergency department. For quick but
expensive medical care, head to the private hospital, Belize
Medical Associates (5791 St Thomas St T 223 0302,
W belizemedical.com), with all the main specialities and
24hr emergency room.
Pharmacy
Brodies (see above) has a well-stocked
pharmacy.
Police The main police station is on Queen St, a block north
of the Swing Bridge ( T 227 2210). For emergencies, dial
T 90 or 911 nationwide. Alternatively, contact the tourism
police (see box, p.54).
Post o ce The main post o ce is on N Front St, northeast
of the Swing Bridge (Mon-Fri 8am-4.30pm).
Belize District
The Belize District is packed with day trips from the city, no matter what you direction
you go - west, north and south. Along the George Price Highway (formerly the Western
Hwy), you'll find the world-renowned Belize Zoo , the Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary
and more. A journey north on the Philip Goldson Highway (formerly the Northern
Hwy) brings you to a richly diverse array of wildlife reserves and Maya history,
