to students of reef ecology, but it's a wonderful option for
anyone. As well as very comfortable private-bath cabins,

dorm rooms, available to independent travellers when not

thatched dining room serves delicious meals, included in the
price, and a fleet of boats offers diving (US$150 for a two-

island” fantasy right here, by staying one of twelve simple
stilted wood-and-thatch cabins, over the water or on the
beach, overlooking the reef; a dorm bed in the main
wooden house; or simply camping out. Nightly rates are
available, but unless you come for a full week on the
resort's catamaran, which leaves the Sittee River (see
p.192) on Sun at 9am and returns the next Sat, the boat trip
here can be prohibitively expensive. Meals are not included,
but there's an excellent restaurant, as well as kerosene
stoves in the cabins, and open-air bbq grills; one evening
each week features a potluck supper. You can bring your
own food and drink, or buy essentials such as bread, fish
and lobster. The staff pretty much leave you to your own
devices, but activities like sea-kayaking, fishing, snorkelling
and scuba diving (with bargain PADI certification) are
available with expert guides, some born and raise d on the
