steps lead up to the wooden lookout tower or
mirador

Another trail starts at the clearing here, and parallels the northern side of the
peninsula for ten minutes - keep the lake to your left - until it reaches a signposted left
turn for
La Playita
. Immediately below, a quiet beach, equipped with picnic benches
and toilets, fronts onto the turquoise water of the lake. To complete a circuit back to
San Miguel village, simply turn left at the end of the beach road and follow the track
for fifteen minutes.

Parque Natural Ixpanpajul
, seven miles southeast of Santa Elena, just off the road
towards Tikal, is a rainforest preserve where a network of suspension bridges and stone
paths connect various forested hilltops. From the middle of the bridges you can enjoy a
monkey's-eye view of the canopy, while on top of the highest hill a
mirador
offers views
of virtually the entire the Petén Itzá basin. All sorts of activities are available to thrill-
seeking visitors, including

, horseriding and heading out on a night safari.
