INLAND TOURS AND TRIPS
For a full picture of Belize, it's well worth complementing your time in the sun and sand
with an adventure to the Belizean interior . And, since so many visitors make Ambergris
Caye their base, San Pedro has become a prime jumping-off point for trips to the mainland,
with a huge range of deals. Most of the high-end resorts and hotels will either offer their
own tours or can arrange one with an independent company. Even the budget hotels can
at the very least point you in the direction of quality tour companies. If you plan on staying
in San Pedro for your entire trip, it's best to focus on day trips to Northern Belize and the
Belize District - the area in and around Belize City. Tours to Cayo and the west can certainly
be arranged, but if you'd like a more relaxed itinerary, you'd be better off spending a few
nights on the mainland. Top day-trips include to the Maya site of Altun Ha (around
US$75-150, depending on additional stops; see p.62); Lamanai (US$125-250; see p.74);
and the Belize District (US$75-150), which may include the Belize Zoo (p.59), Community
Baboon Sanctuary (see p.61) and Crooked Tree (see p.63). Also extremely popular is cave
tubing (starting at US$150) and jungle zip-lining (starting at US$175) in Cayo - both are
offered as day-trips, but keep in mind that it's a long day, leaving very early and returning
just in time to catch the last boat from Belize City. All trip prices usually include lunch, soft
drinks and beer and entrance fee.
In addition to the tours run by the hotels and resorts, local companies in San Pedro that
cover the inland include Tanisha Ecological Tours (see opposite) and Seaduced by Belize (see
above). On Caye Caulker, Anwar Snorkel Tours (see p.109) and Tsunami Adventures (see p.110)
both offer inland tours.
