The More Things Change. . .
As you can see, the sound for games is ever changing and morphing;
as this topic goes to press, HTML5 and other formats are boldly moving
into the future. Flash, a long-time and well-used stalwart of the online
gaming industry, may be on its last legs, and no one really knows
which platforms will be around in i ve years. These rapidly shifting
tides in the game industry can make you seasick, but are common and
present opportunities for entrepreneurially minded audio folks. One
thing is certain—as audio professionals in games, it is part of our job to
understand the capabilities of these new formats. We must be technical
evangelists to one degree or another, because our jobs depend on it.
After all, how can you possibly create the soundtrack for the next mega
cult hit without knowing what the hardware and software can do
for you?
