In-Depth Information
A few pointers about participating in a game jam:
Be there on the initial day of the jam. The i rst day of a game jam is
by far the most important—this is when they socialize, form teams,
and devise the ideas for games.
You don't have to be onsite the whole time (onsite jams only) . This
might sound contradictory since we just discussed how important it
is to be there on the i rst day. However, after that, it may be better for
you to work from home. An onsite game jam can be a chaotic af air.
Thus, you have the option of working from home and supplying your
assets remotely via Dropbox, email, or some other service.
Be prepared for any outcome . For a number of reasons your team
may not end up i nishing the game. This takes a while to get used to.
After all, you're there to make music for a game and get your sounds
out there in front of everyone else. However, if you think of the
experience as simply getting to know a bunch of games and game
developers, and networking with them, you'll more than likely have a
great time, regardless of how your team's game turns out.
Conclusion
Sound for games is an exciting, growing and constantly changing i eld.
Due to this growing demand, competition is also growing. By applying
a few of the fundamental tools we have discussed in this level, and with
hard work and luck, you can stay ahead of the competition. Remember,
the game business evolves rapidly in lock step with the development of
new and innovative technologies. Games and gamii cation are a fact of
life in modern society, and solid audio designers are the ones who will
develop the next “wow” generation of audio magic. This state of constant
change and l ux can feel daunting and overwhelming at times. Stay
positive—the truth is, uncertainty is also a great agent of opportunity.
New platforms and software require designers who are not afraid to get
out ahead of the curve and get their hands dirty. That's where you come
in—simply being the i rst to use and understand a new tool can lead
to good work and solid contracts. And always keep in mind, this is the
entertainment industry! It is dei nitely a rollercoaster ride, propelled by
word of mouth, where good news about your success travels fast, and
bad news even faster. Be professional and understand the markets. And
lastly, and most importantly, have fun out there!
