Create an audio-based website that shows audio and video clips chiel y. If you are a sound designer,
include more than just individual sounds; also include games for which you designed the majority of
sounds. If you are interested in composing, you should include examples of music in various styles. You
have a few options for including this work.
Include gameplay clips.
The easiest, most direct way is to upload a video clip that shows between 2 and
4 minutes of gameplay in action. You can also link to clips on YouTube or similar services.
Interactive is Best! Including Web Players
The best way to showcase your work as a game audio professional is to include interactive real time
gameplay examples. This can be tricky and requires a bit more technical implementation, but a web
player game on your website allows interested employers to experience gameplay i rsthand in the
browser environment. It's a more ideal method of showcasing interactive/adaptive sound design or
music for games and is generally a much better showcase for your skills in Interactive media.
As we've discussed, Unity of ers the ability to build out your project as a WebPlayer build, which can
play in a browser. Bear in mind that doing this requires that the viewer downloads a plug-in that is
not standard with most web browsers, so your website should include a prominent link to obtain
the plug-in. Also keep in mind, mobile devices cannot currently display WebPlayer builds. The best
method is probably a combination of these two options, so prospective employers can easily watch
videos of gameplay or download the plug-in to play the game in the browser themselves on a
desktop PC or Mac.
Again, you should provide a variety of individual sounds to show your creativity and versatility in creating
sounds for dif erent purposes. It is also a good idea to use a Flash or JavaScript/HTML5 player to organize
your clips (Javascript/HTML5 are preferred over Flash, especially for iOS users).
Soundcloud Audio Players/Playlists
In addition to playthrough movies or web players, a Soundcloud account is a very common way to
showcase your work. Soundcloud is free for under 2 hours of audio (120 minutes) and features many
embedded players (including HTML5-based ones) that you can incorporate into your website.
Focusing Your Website
You must decide where the focus of your portfolio site will be. For example, if you aspire to be a sound
designer, you should include a variety of clips and examples of the audio design you are interested
in pursuing. Similarly, if you aspire to work on music, you should provide musically-oriented clips. If
your goal is to work in implementation and middleware, provide i les in the format of your respective
middleware application, or create a screen recording of a walk-through, emphasizing the interactive
aspects of your project. It is not a bad idea to demonstrate versatility if you are interested in several i elds.
Today's employers like an employee who can handle a variety of tasks.
