In-Depth Information
Do you i nd yourself attracted to creating
music or sound?
In most cases, I would hope the answer to this question is a resounding
“Heck Yeah!!” Many of you may even be massively inspired by the
amazing music soundtracks and sound design in such AAA game
series as Battlei eld , Assassin's Creed , Bioshock , Dead Space , Mass Ef ect ,
Dragon Age , and countless others. However, being a sound designer or
composer for an AAA console game is equivalent in stature to being the
sound designer or composer for a summer blockbuster movie. There
unfortunately aren't that many positions available at the top. You can
get there, with a lot of talent and dedication, but you'll probably have to
work your way up over time.
However, there are many opportunities in the indie console game
world. The huge inl ux of social and mobile games is another huge and
expanding territory, and you can also gain experience while you are in
school.
Here are some additional questions to ask that might help you direct
your interests to one of these areas within the broader dei nition of game
audio job positions.
Do you have programming experience
or are you interested in programming
or scripting in general?
Answering yes to these questions directs you toward the implementation
or integration side of things. You might also i nd middleware such as
FMOD or Wwise to be more to your liking. Bear in mind that the industry
is sorely in need of capable implementers and especially programmers.
Taking a look at programming languages: Javascript, Objective-C (for iOS
games), and Java/C# for Android are just a few examples. Keep in mind
that how deeply you get into the programming side is a personal choice.
But, it's never a bad idea to have a general idea of how these things work.
Are you interested in the idea of music or
sound that continually evolves within a
game environment?
Answering yes to this question puts you i rmly in the camp of adaptive
music or sound. Although the market for specialists in this subi eld is
growing, adaptive music and sound is not always the most common
