In-Depth Information
In summary, the role of the information professional in the digital era is to
understand and evaluate new methods of creating, managing and storing digital
records (e.g., image, audio, video and text). As image-making practices evolve, both
creators and preservers are adopting new technologies to assist in accessing,
disseminating, managing and storing large data sets such as digital image collections.
It is the responsibility of archivists and librarians to weigh the benefits and risks
posed by proprietary cloud based solutions. It is important to remember that these
solutions are not trusted digital preservation systems in which metadata is managed
and generated throughout the lifecycle of the digital record. The lack of transparency
and control provided by third-party services that utilize cloud-based infrastructure and
services present a number of challenges to determining what is actually happening to
the digital information held within these systems. At this stage there are many issues
to explore and few guidelines to assist individuals and organizations in selecting
cloud based services [12]. The outcome of international multidisciplinary projects
such as Records in the Cloud, the Law of Evidence in the Digital Environment and
InterPARES Trust will be the contribution of research findings towards the
development of international policies, procedures and standards concerning digital
records entrusted to the Internet.
Acknowledgments. The Records in the Cloud (RIC) Project is supported by a Social
Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Insight Grant.
