THE ASIATIC LIONS OF SASANGIR
NATIONAL PARK
The road from the very interesting Junagadh led towards Sasangir (Sasan Gir) Forest and
Sanctuary, only 65 kms/40 miles away. Small towns, cotton fields, gigantic loads of sugar
cane being transported, tuk-tuks and even a
Sadhu
appeared along the road.
Sadhus
wear
ochre-colored clothing that symbolizes renunciation. A
Sadhu
can be called a mystic, ascet-
ic and/or just a wandering monk (holy man).
Our car finally passed signs announcing the perimeter of Sasangir National Park. A little
further on, a crowd of people stood along the road, peering into the bushes. A lone crocodile
in the bushes, blended in so perfectly with the vegetation, it took a while before my eyes
could find it. This crowd was waiting for a park service ranger to come transport the cro-
codile further into the park.
