I began taking pictures, fast and furiously, from the minute Desheret drove through one
of Junagadh's ancient gates past an exotic-looking building. Guide Niru asked," Do you
want to stop for a closer look?" Come on...do bears #*!# in the woods? Two, incredible,
mausoleums were a fusion of Gothic-Indo-Islamic architecture that blew our respective
minds; a conglomeration of onion-shaped domes in every size; whirls, whorls, balconies,
arches, and spiraled staircases that led up to four minarets.
Junagadh has older mausoleums but these two are the ultimate. Begun in 1878, and
completed in 1892, they house the tombs of Mahabat Kan and Baha-ud-din, a prime minis-
ter of a Nawab (“ Nawab ” is a high title for nobles). Next to them was the Junagadh Masjid
Mosque, and next to that a school. Both, just " beautiful ."
