In-Depth Information
I walked around the rooms inside with fingers in ears to drown out the loom noise. My
first question was, "Don't these young girls become deaf from the noise?" They are given
headsets, but don't like to wear them. I did see headsets hanging from their looms so that
wasn't a lie. Never did see a headset on anyone's head in any of the three rooms we visited.
(I was prepared to get up on a table, a la Sally Field, and shout UNION .)
Young girls sat on the floor in one room, hand turning a machine with threads onto
bobbins, for eight, straight hours. Travels With Sheila gave it a try. Talk about building up
biceps and arm muscles! Sweat was flying after only a few minutes which gave the girls a
good laugh.
