The Beach at Mandavi Palace - Gujarat, India
It was a very short drive (think, minutes) to the Maharajah's other endeavor, the Beach
at Mandavi Palace. The manager graciously allowed us to visit one of the 10 air-conditioned
tents, designed to resemble the colonialperiod hunting camps of the Maharajahs. Windows
were covered with netting to keep insects out, and rolled down to keep out dust and sun.
Each tent has a private bathroom with hot and cold running water, showers, and western-
style toilets.
This property has what is reputed to be the only private beach in India. We stood on
the beach stretching for 2-1/2 kms/1+ mile, with not one other soul visible. The shallow
drop-off into the Arabian Sea was warm! The Beach has a restaurant, washrooms, showers,
beach volleyball, sun decks and thatched sitting areas. The Beach at Mandavi Palace is fully
booked from Christmas through New Years.
Rates are (or were) 6,000 Rupees per night for 2 persons ($133 U.S.), including three meals
a day, service and taxes. A locale to consider for your next sun exploration...
