The Pottery Village of Khavada
Back in the car, towards the last permit village, Khavada, a small pottery village. The
master craftsman sat at his wheel, throwing clay, forming jars, vats, and small containers;
women painted details on the finished pottery wearing heavy silver bracelets and anklets that
are never removed; small children acted as go-fers and did menial work. Each person in a
village, whether big or small, had a job to do. I'll be darned if all the finished pots drying in
the sun didn't resemble a field of mushrooms!
I considered buying pottery until sanity returned. How in the heck would we carry break-
able pots through Gujarat for three weeks before flying 8,000 miles back to Chicago? Bye-
bye, Khavada, and show us to a bed. We are exhausted!
