The White Desert in The Rann of Kutch,
Gujarat, India
Far north of Bhuj is the White Desert, extending to the border of Pakistan, which is why
you need permits. You don't need reminding about how borders between India and Pakistan
seem to be in a perpetually tense mode. (Tourists can just travel so...far...even with a permit.)
Gujarat had just suffered through unusual, out-of-season rains which cut down on the White
Desert "crunch factor.” Still, a blinding white, with mirages shimmering in the distance.
Preparations were in full swing at the edge of the White Desert for the annual Kutch
Festival (DecemberJanuary). Workers were erecting large tents for guests to sleep in, stages
for music and dancing. A cursory glance from us before heading back south, with three
more villages to still visit.
