The Beyond Unique Rogan Art in Nirona
Nirona was the next village where "Traditional Rogan Art" is the big attraction. This
unique, and creative art form, has been handed down in one Nirona family for 400 years ;
it has been kept alive through generations of men who are the traditional artists. Neither of
us knew what "Rogan Art" was, but guide, Kantilal, had promised something out of the or-
dinary. We entered the house, plastered with testimonials, where two, young men sat on the
floor working on what appeared to be embroideries.
A surprising demonstration was given by the Nirona family. This man outlined a free-
hand design on cloth by using a thin line of paint. He then folded the cloth in half and,
abracadabra, had a mirror image of his design. Once the cloth is covered with the artist's
design, it dries in the sun for a day. After this portion of the lengthy process in finished, the
entire pattern must be filled in . That can take an artist up to three months, working eight
hours a day, every day. Please take a few minutes to watch Travels With Sheila's Rogan Art
Video on YouTube.com to really understand this very unique, art.
Khavada was a short distance from Nirona where a roadside police station issued permits for
villages. Extra, passport-size photographs weren't needed after all.
