TRIBAL VILLAGES NORTH OF BHUJ
Villages, north of Bhuj, are in the Banni, permit-only area. These tribes engage in a vari-
ety of handicrafts from woodworking, to blacksmithing, to embroideries, to pottery; each
village concentrates on a specialty. Rounded houses ( bhungas ) are made of stone, mud, and
dung; a conical roof, and thick walls keep the interior cool during summer, warm during the
chilly winter. The houses are also brightly decorated on the outside, showing the owner's
creativity.
People are friendly, and don't mind taking visitors inside their home. I've mentioned it
before and, if you don't mind, I'll repeat myself. There may be dirt in the streets of India,
but people's homes are kept immaculately clean !
