Where to Stay in Bhuj
A meet and greet at Bhuj Airport by guide, Kantilal with driver Desheret who transferred
us to the Hotel Prince Residence (hotelprinceonline.com), located near the airport in the
heart of the commercial area. Underwhelmed at first sight of this hotel, we later discovered
there are only two 3*** hotels in Bhuj and this is one of them. Too exhausted to care, we
unpacked, took a fast shower in one of those in-the-wall, open showers that floods the floor,
popped a sleeping pill, and hit the sack with the oh so necessary ear plugs (Prince Residency
Hotel is located right off the main highway).
Gujarat has very cool to cold nights in December, and idiot me did not follow one of
my basic travel tips. Pack lightweight, thermal underwear that can be rolled into a ball,
takes little space, and doubles as pajamas. Thermals would have made a big difference in
my comfort level instead of asking for extra blankets throughout Gujarat.
Hotel Prince is classified as a budget hotel with high class amenities, accommodation
and other services; laundry, telephone, currency exchange are offered. Gujarat is not only
seriously Vegetarian , but also “Dry” except for Diu. There are intricate permits available
for foreigners to buy liquor, but not worth the bother. Vegetarian we can contend with.
“Dry,” we'll pretend we've checked in to Betty Ford for three weeks, “drying” out. The ve-
getarian breakfast options, lunch options, dinner options, were the same. No eggs, no chick-
en, only vegetables. That left grilled cheese sandwiches and coffee for breakfast. Lunch was
a veggie burger off the limited menu that will never cross lips again in this lifetime. It looked
like dog food. Smelled like dog food and was abominable!
